The New Forest hasn't really changed since William the Conqueror gave it his special protection over 900 years ago. The ancient system set in place to protect the forest still works today through the efforts of Verderers, Agisters and Commoners - literally the judges, police and land users of the forest.
More than 400 Commoners turn their cattle, pigs, ponies and donkeys out, whilst the Agisters police the heaths and woods, checking on the welfare of around 5000 animals all year round.
